The useful question is not whether Costco has low prices in general. It is whether the savings you are likely to keep—after the annual fee and the practical costs of shopping there—beat what you would spend without a membership.
Start with products you already buy and compare unit prices with your normal stores. Then add realistic gas savings and only the other benefits you expect to use. Avoid counting a large package as savings if part of it will expire, or counting a service discount before comparing the final price elsewhere.
Costco is more likely to work when you regularly buy enough eligible products, can use larger quantities without waste, live or drive near a warehouse, and can buy fuel there without a special trip. A second household cardholder can also make it easier for a couple or family to use the membership consistently.
The fee is harder to recover when visits are infrequent, the warehouse is out of the way, storage is limited, or your usual purchases are cheaper elsewhere. It may also be a poor fit if bulk sizes lead to unused food or if browsing encourages extra purchases that were not in the budget.
Costco currently lists Gold Star at $65 per year and Executive at $130 per year, plus applicable tax. Both include a free Household Card and access to Costco locations worldwide. Executive adds an annual 2% Reward on qualified purchases, capped at $1,250, plus additional benefits on select Costco Services and Costco Travel products. The Executive upgrade costs $65 more than Gold Star. At a 2% reward rate, $3,250 in qualified annual purchases produces a $65 reward, so that is the simple reward-only break-even point for the upgrade. Not every purchase qualifies: Costco says gasoline, membership fees, food-court purchases, taxes, and several other categories are excluded. That is why this calculator excludes gas from the Executive Reward calculation.
There is no single spending target because product savings, gas savings, and other benefits vary. If shopping savings were the only benefit and averaged 2%, a $65 Gold Star fee would require $3,250 of annual purchases to break even. That example is arithmetic, not a claim that Costco will save everyone 2%.
The calculator solves the broader question by adding the savings categories you enter and subtracting the selected fee. For Executive, it separately adds 2% of qualified purchases, subject to the current reward cap.
Fuel can materially change the result for someone who drives frequently and already passes a Costco gas station. The estimate divides annual miles by vehicle MPG, applies the percentage of fuel you expect to buy at Costco, and multiplies those gallons by your local price difference.
Use prices from stations you would realistically visit. A lower pump price can be offset by an extra drive, a long wait, or buying only a small share of your annual fuel there. Gas savings are counted as a separate benefit and do not earn the Executive 2% Reward.
It can be, but household size alone does not decide the result. A single person may recover the fee through fuel, shelf-stable goods, frozen products, tires, optical purchases, travel, or other services they would use anyway. Smaller living spaces and perishable bulk packages make waste and storage especially important to consider.
Couples and families may use larger quantities more easily and combine purchases made by the primary member and Household Cardholder. Costco states that one free Household Card is included for an eligible person living at the same address. More consumption can improve the math, but it does not guarantee savings if the household switches to more expensive items or buys more than it needs.
Only enter a dollar value for benefits you have compared and genuinely expect to use. Costco’s membership benefits page provides the current program overview.
The calculator does not automatically subtract these costs because they differ by household. Reduce your estimated savings or enter conservative assumptions to account for them.
The calculator annualizes the shopping and mileage figures you enter. It estimates shopping savings as annual eligible purchases multiplied by your savings-rate assumption. Gas savings equal annual miles divided by MPG, multiplied by your Costco fuel share and the price difference per gallon. The “other savings” field lets you include benefits that are not already counted.
For Executive membership, the calculator adds 2% of entered eligible purchases, capped at $1,250. It then subtracts the selected annual membership fee from total estimated benefits. A positive number means the entered benefits exceed the fee; a negative number shows the remaining annual shortfall. A result within $15 of zero is labeled borderline because small changes in prices or behavior could reverse it.
